Although you would never guess it to be true by the current temperatures, Thanksgiving, Christmas and, hopefully, “sweater weather” are all just around the corner. For many homeowners these events will trigger forays into attics, closets or storage sheds in search of decorations and winter clothing.
Before you dive head first into these seldom used areas, a word to the wise …. Brown Recluse spiders are so named for a reason. Brown Recluse spiders prefer to hide in out-of-the-way places which are not frequently disturbed. What place could be less frequently disturbed than a box which is only opened once a year?
Whether your preferred storage area is in the attic, basement or shed, before bringing down, up or in the warm clothes and Christmas decorations be sure to wear gloves and long sleeves to avoid a spider bite. When putting away the summer clothes or repacking decorations for storage after the holiday season, securely taping the boxes closed and positioning them away from the wall will limit hiding places for spiders.
Remember that spiders don’t want to bite us, and in fact bites usually occur when the spider is trapped against our skin. If we make an effort to leave spiders alone, believe me, they will do the same. Ways to avoid spiders include shaking coats, hats and sweaters thoroughly before donning when they haven’t been worn for a while. Also be sure to look inside of shoes, boots and gloves which haven’t been worn for a while as well.
